After all, &#8220;the implant is made of titanium, it cannot get sick.&#8221; That belief, as widespread as it is dangerous, is precisely the starting point from which <a href=\"https:\/\/platondental.com\/doctor\/dentista-en-mallorca\/\">Dr. Plat\u00f3n<\/a> built his lecture for the professionals of AHIADEC. AHIADEC is the professional reference body for dental hygienists and dental assistants in Catalonia, a key group in the early detection of periodontal and implant disease. The fact that an association of this profile invites Dr. Plat\u00f3n to deliver advanced clinical training is, in itself, a recognition of his career.<\/p><p>During the session, which was theoretical-practical in nature, the doctor from <strong>Plat\u00f3n Dental<\/strong> \u2014 together with Dr. Puglisi \u2014 <strong>addressed from different perspectives the existing options for the treatment of periodontal problems<\/strong>. Both highlighted the <strong>risk factors in peri-implantitis and the preventive methods<\/strong> available to us to maintain the health of patients who have <a href=\"https:\/\/platondental.com\/estetica-dental-mallorca\/implantes-dentales-palma-y-manacor\/\">implants<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af104a07 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"af104a07\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Peri-implantitis: what it is and why it matters<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f1ce177 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6f1ce177\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Peri-implantitis is a bacterial infection that affects the tissues surrounding a dental implant: the gum and, in more advanced stages, the bone that supports it. Its mechanism is similar to that of classic <a title=\"periodontitis\" href=\"https:\/\/platondental.com\/en\/treatments\/periodontics\/\">periodontitis<\/a>, but with some particularities that make it more aggressive and, at times, more difficult to treat. <strong>According to data from the Spanish Society of <a title=\"periodontics\" href=\"https:\/\/platondental.com\/en\/treatments\/periodontics\/\">Periodontics<\/a> (SEPA), it is estimated that between 10 and 20% of placed implants will develop some degree of peri-implantitis over their useful life.<\/strong><\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efp.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Federation of Periodontology (EFP)<\/a> also points out that the actual prevalence of peri-implantitis could be even higher, given that many cases are diagnosed late, when bone loss is already significant. Hence the importance of dental hygienists and dental assistants \u2014 the professionals who most frequently carry out maintenance check-ups \u2014 being trained to detect the first warning signs. In its initial phases \u2014 when we are still dealing with implant mucositis \u2014 the symptoms are subtle and easy to ignore. Knowing how to recognise them in time makes the difference between a simple treatment and a complex one.<\/p><p><strong>Signs of implant mucositis<\/strong> (reversible phase, without bone loss):<\/p><ul>\n  <li><strong>Bleeding when brushing or using floss<\/strong> around the implant, without apparent pain.<\/li>\n  <li>Reddened or slightly inflamed gum in the area of the implant.<\/li>\n  <li>Sensation of localised swelling that comes and goes.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>Signs of established peri-implantitis<\/strong> (with progressive bone loss):<\/p><ul>\n  <li><strong>Spontaneous bleeding<\/strong> without the need to brush, or visible suppuration around the implant.<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Implant mobility<\/strong>: if the implant moves even slightly, bone loss is already advanced.<\/li>\n  <li>Pain under pressure or when chewing in the area of the implant.<\/li>\n  <li>Persistent bad taste or halitosis that does not improve with regular hygiene.<\/li>\n  <li>Visible gum recession, with exposure of part of the implant surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>If you recognise any of these signs, <strong>do not wait for your next scheduled check-up: call your clinic<\/strong>. But &#8220;well-maintained&#8221; implies regular check-ups, specific interdental hygiene and control of risk factors.
