Pediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry specialized in the oral health care of children and adolescents. Its objective is not only to treat problems when they appear, but to prevent them from the first years of life, ensuring a correct development of teeth, gums and jaw bones.
The pediatric dentist accompanies the child at every stage, from the eruption of the first milk teeth to the replacement of the permanent dentition, monitoring the appearance of caries, possible malocclusions or alterations in growth. In addition, he/she plays a key role in the education of oral hygiene habits, promoting healthy routines that will be maintained in adult life.
In Platón Clinics we offer a close environment adapted to the little ones, with specialists who combine technical training and child sensitivity so that each visit is a positive experience without fear.
The first visit to the dentist should take place much earlier than most parents think. Specialists in pediatric dentistry recommend that children visit the dentist as early as the first year of life or, at the latest, within six months after the eruption of the first baby tooth.
This early visit allows the pediatric dentist to evaluate the growth of the mouth, detect early any alteration and guide parents in the correct oral hygiene of the baby. It also helps the child to become familiar with the dental clinic in a calm and positive environment, avoiding fears in the future.
From this first appointment, it is advisable to perform periodic check-ups, which will be adapted to each stage of growth. In this way, we can guarantee a healthy mouth, prevent the appearance of childhood caries and accompany the child in the correct development of his or her smile.
During childhood and adolescence different dental problems can appear that, if not detected in time, can affect the development of the mouth and the general health of the child. The most frequent are:
Infant caries or early childhood caries: very common due to the consumption of sugars, prolonged use of bottles and insufficient hygiene habits. Its early detection avoids painful complications and infections that can damage the permanent teeth in formation.
Dental trauma: blows during play or sports are common in childhood and can cause fractures or the loss of a temporary or permanent tooth. It is essential to see a pediatric dentist immediately to assess the best solution.
Alterations in dental eruption: in some children the baby teeth fall out too late or the permanent teeth erupt with anomalous positions, generating space problems and malocclusions.
Bite problems and malocclusions: when the jaws do not fit together correctly, crossbites, open bites or overbites appear, which can interfere with chewing, speech and facial development.
Inadequate oral habits: such as prolonged pacifier use, digital sucking or oral breathing, which can alter the growth and position of the teeth.
Pediatric dentistry not only focuses on treating these problems when they appear, but also on anticipating and preventing them, ensuring that children grow up with a healthy mouth and a well-developed smile.
Visiting the dentist from the first years of life not only helps prevent oral problems, but also provides multiple benefits that will accompany the child throughout his or her life:
Effective prevention of caries and gum disease: regular check-ups detect any signs of caries or gingival inflammation in the early stages, avoiding painful complications and more invasive treatments in the future.
Early detection of alterations in growth: the pediatric dentist can identify problems in dental eruption or in the development of the jaws, applying interceptive measures that facilitate the correct development of the mouth.
Creation of healthy hygiene habits: from an early age, children learn how to brush properly and the importance of taking care of their mouth, generating routines that they will keep as adults.
Reducing fear of the dentist: the earlier children become familiar with the clinical environment and the specialists, the more natural it will be for them to go for check-ups, avoiding odontophobia in the future.
Positive impact on self-esteem: a healthy mouth and a well-cared-for smile from infancy reinforce a child’s self-confidence and promote social development.
Visiting the dentist from an early age is the best investment in your child’s future health and well-being, ensuring that he or she grows up with a strong, healthy and happy smile.
The professionals specialized in periodontics have extensive experience and training in the most advanced techniques for the treatment of gum disease and supporting tissues.
Each treatment is individually designed, combining clinical expertise, digital technology and a human approach that accompanies the patient throughout the process.
More than 40 years of experience support the excellence in diagnosis, treatment and periodontal prevention in our clinics in Palma and Manacor, guaranteeing lasting results and a close and professional attention.
Pediatric dentistry not only focuses on prevention, but also on offering treatments adapted to the specific needs of each child. Among the most frequent are:
Fillings in primary teeth: when caries appears in a baby tooth, fillings are made with biocompatible materials to stop the progression and preserve the tooth until its natural replacement.
Pulpectomies and pulpotomies: in cases of deep caries affecting the nerve, conservative root canal treatments are performed on baby teeth to relieve pain and maintain the tooth until it is replaced by the definitive one.
Fissure sealants: application of a protective resin to newly erupted permanent molars, which acts as a barrier against caries in the most vulnerable areas.
Fluoride applications: strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of caries in children with a greater predisposition.
Interceptive orthodontics: early treatments that correct harmful habits and guide the growth of the jaws, avoiding more complex problems in adolescence.
Treatment of dental trauma: immediate attention to fractures or falls of temporary or permanent teeth to avoid complications and preserve the child’s oral health.
Each treatment is performed in an adapted environment, with minimally invasive techniques and a close treatment that transmits confidence to the child and peace of mind to the parents.
At Platón Clinics we also incorporate state-of-the-art technology in children’s dental care, because modern and accurate care from childhood makes a difference in future oral health.
Digital diagnosis without discomfort: we have intraoral scanners that replace traditional impressions with pastes, offering a faster, more comfortable and accurate experience for children.
Low-dose digital radiology: we use state-of-the-art radiographic equipment that reduces radiation to a minimum, adapted to the needs and safety of the youngest patients.
State-of-the-art sealants and materials: we apply highly effective protective resins and fluoride gels that reinforce enamel and prevent caries in a safe and long-lasting manner.
Digital interceptive orthodontics: planning is carried out by means of 3D models that make it possible to anticipate alterations in the growth of the jaws and guide the development of the mouth in a precise and personalized way.
Thanks to these tools, pediatric dentistry treatments are more effective, safe and comfortable, ensuring quality care for children from the first years of life.
Prevention is the most effective tool to ensure children’s oral health. Instilling hygiene and oral care habits from an early age minimizes the risk of caries, gum disease and growth problems.
Some of the most important care are:
Daily oral hygiene: from the eruption of the first tooth, cleaning with a soft-bristled toothbrush for children is recommended and, from 2-3 years of age, the use of toothpaste with fluoride in small amounts.
Control of sugar consumption: limiting soft drinks, sweets and sugary juices is essential to avoid tooth decay, one of the most frequent problems in childhood.
Periodic visits to the pediatric dentist: check-ups allow us to control the eruption of teeth, detect any alteration early and perform cleanings or fluoride applications when necessary.
Monitoring of oral habits: prolonged use of pacifiers, thumb sucking or oral breathing can alter dental and jaw development; detecting them early is key to avoid consequences.
Protection against trauma: in children who practice contact sports, the use of mouthguards is essential to prevent fractures or tooth loss.
The combination of good habits at home and regular professional check-ups ensures that children grow up with a healthy, strong mouth that is ready for adult life.

The first visit is recommended around the first year of life or when the first baby tooth erupts. This allows to check the correct development and guide the parents in the initial care.
Although they are temporary, baby teeth perform essential functions: they allow chewing, speaking correctly and maintain the space for the permanent teeth. If they are lost prematurely, alignment and bite problems can occur.
The periodicity depends on each case, but it is usual to perform check-ups every 6 months. In children with a higher risk of caries or gum problems, check-ups may be more frequent.
The best prevention is to combine good daily hygiene with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste adapted to age, a balanced diet low in sugars and regular check-ups. Sealants and fluoride applications performed in the clinic are also very useful.
It is a type of early orthodontics that is applied during childhood to guide the growth of the maxillary bones and correct harmful habits. Its objective is to prevent severe malocclusions and facilitate future treatment.
In the beginning, parents should directly assist in brushing. As the child grows, he/she can do it alone under supervision. There are brushes adapted to each age group and simple techniques that the pediatric dentist can teach in the office.
We dedicate all the time and attention you deserve to your first appointment: we carry out a thorough examination of your mouth and gums, accompanied by X-rays, to offer you an accurate diagnosis and a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan.
