Do you know what happens at a dental clinic when the team fails to keep up to date? The answer is simple: patients notice. Not always in something visible, but in the quality of care, in the precision of procedures and in the confidence that each visit generates. That is why, at Platón Dental, we are committed to continuous training as an essential part of the way we work.

On 2 July, our hygienists Cristina Hidalgo and María Antonia Riera travelled to Madrid to take part in the “Specialised management course for dental auxiliary staff and dental hygienists”, organised by Neosalut, a leading training body for professionals in the dental sector.

What our hygienists learned in Madrid

The course was divided into two complementary sections: a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical section covered the fundamentals of clinical management: scheduling, patient care protocols, internal communication and coordination between auxiliary staff and dentists. The practical section was particularly valuable because it recreated real everyday situations from a working clinic, allowing the hygienists to apply what they had learned in a simulated environment before transferring it to their daily practice. Cristina and María Antonia highlighted precisely the usefulness of working with real practical cases.

This type of training is not only about clinical technique: it is about how a dental hygienist can become the cornerstone of the patient experience within the clinic. From the first phone call to the follow-up after a prophylaxis, every detail matters.

What a dental hygienist does and why it matters so much

Many patients arrive at the clinic thinking that a visit to the hygienist is just a formality. In reality, it is one of the most important appointments of the year for your oral health. Dental hygienists are the professionals responsible for carrying out professional oral hygiene, also known as prophylaxis or scaling: the removal of tartar and bacterial plaque that daily brushing cannot reach.

But their work goes far beyond cleaning. A trained hygienist also:

  • Assesses the condition of the gums and detects early signs of periodontitis or gingivitis.
  • Instructs patients in oral hygiene techniques tailored to their mouth and their needs.
  • Monitors patients undergoing active periodontics treatment.
  • Applies fluoride and sealants to patients at higher risk of cavities.
  • Coordinates with the dentist to refer cases that require specialist treatment.

In short, the hygienist is the professional who spends the most time with the patient and who is best placed to detect changes in their oral health over time. That is why having specialised hygienists who are constantly updating their knowledge makes a real difference to the quality of care. A well-trained hygienist is, in many respects, the first line of prevention in your dental clinic.

How your hygiene visit improves when the team trains

The clinical management training that Cristina and María Antonia received has a direct impact on what you experience as a patient. When auxiliary staff know the protocols, they manage time more effectively, reduce waiting times and can anticipate your needs before you sit in the chair. Hygienists who master these processes also achieve smoother coordination with the rest of the clinical team.

A hygienist who has worked on clinical communication knows how to explain what she is doing during the scaling, why it is important to remove bacterial plaque from interproximal areas and what you can do at home to maintain the results. That ability to convey information clearly transforms a routine clean into a genuine preventive consultation.

At Platón Dental, the professional dental hygiene visit is designed with precisely that approach in mind: not just to clean, but to educate, prevent and support.

Why continuous training matters at a dental clinic

Dentistry moves fast. Materials change, protocols are updated and patient expectations grow. A team that does not train falls behind, even if it has years of experience. This is especially relevant for hygienists, who must stay current in both clinical techniques and management and communication skills. Continuous training is not a luxury or an added extra: it is the guarantee that the care you receive today is as good as, or better than, the care you received a year ago.

At Platón Dental we firmly believe that investing in the training of our hygienists is investing directly in the health of our patients. Every course, every session and every protocol update translates into a safer, more comfortable and more effective visit for you.

If you have any questions about when your last oral hygiene check-up was, or would like to find out more about how we work, do not hesitate to get in touch. Our hygienists will be delighted to explain everything you need to know.
